How we keep learners safe online
As digital learning continues to evolve, we want to make sure that learners are not only supported academically but also protected online. Mindful Education’s Director of Technology, Mike Verhaag discusses our approach to ensuring that learners stay safe online while using our online platform for learning.
How do we keep learning safe?
Our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) allows us to keep learners within a controlled digital environment. It is designed to provide everything a learner needs in one place, from study materials and videos to support tools, reducing the need to search externally.
This is important when considering the risks associated with the wider internet, such as misinformation, scams, or inappropriate content. By curating and monitoring all resources within the VLE, we ensure that learners are engaging with accurate, syllabus-aligned material that has been approved by our academic teams. Even when external resources are suggested for further reading, these links are carefully checked and continuously monitored to ensure they remain safe and relevant.
Due to the unmoderated nature of chat spaces, our VLE does not include a chat function for learners. This reduces the risk of inappropriate communication, peer-to-peer pressure, or misuse outside of learning purposes.
How do we utilise AI responsibly?
With AI becoming an everyday tool, it’s essential to introduce it responsibly. Our built-in AI chat function is a great example of this. Rather than giving learners unrestricted access to the internet, the AI tool is limited to our own help and support materials.
This means learners can quickly get answers about how to use the platform, without being exposed to unreliable or unsafe sources. It also introduces them to AI in a controlled, transparent way, with clear labelling to show when content is AI-generated. By integrating AI thoughtfully, we’re not just improving efficiency, we’re also modelling responsible digital behaviour.
How do we ensure that the learning journey is structured and monitored?
The VLE isn’t just a content hub, it’s a structured pathway. Courses are carefully designed with guided learning hours, scheduled units, and built-in study timelines. Lessons are released in a way that supports steady progress, helping learners develop time management and self-regulation skills.
Each lesson includes estimated completion times, and learners receive immediate feedback on their progress, allowing them to reflect and adjust without needing to look elsewhere for answers.
This structured approach does more than support academic success, it helps learners build the critical thinking skills and independence that are essential for navigating the online world safely.
How does our VLE allow us to flag potential safeguarding issues early?
The analytics section in the VLE provides a powerful layer of protection by allowing tutors to monitor learner performance and engagement. If a learner’s performance suddenly drops, it can trigger early intervention. This proactive approach allows tutors to check in, offer support, and identify any underlying issues, academic or personal, before they escalate. It’s a subtle but vital aspect of safeguarding.
How can blended learning safeguard learners?
Online learning can sometimes feel isolating, but our blended approach helps counter this. Regular in-person sessions ensure learners have consistent interaction with peers and a tutor, allowing them to ask questions and share concerns. This balance plays a crucial role in protecting learners and ensuring that they’re not left entirely to their devices.
