Using the Mindful Education VLE to support ESOL learners

Laura Gavieiro Agud Partner Growth & Planning Manager

Across our partner colleges in the last academic year, ESOL learners made up 29% of AAT Level 2, 30% of AAT Level 3, 26% of AAT Level 4, and 23% of CMI Level 3. When enrolled on mainstream professional pathways rather than standalone language courses, acquiring complex subject knowledge alongside vocational terminology and unfamiliar phrasing can present significant challenges.

To help college teams support learners with diverse linguistic backgrounds, we have developed a practical new Mindful Education Insights session: Using the VLE to support ESOL learners.

Delivered as a webinar by ESOL specialists from our team, this session is designed for curriculum leads, managers, and tutors delivering our Online and On Campus courses and apprenticeships who are looking to unlock the full potential of blended learning to foster confident, independent learners.

What does the session cover?

The session explores how the digital component of blended learning directly complements classroom delivery, demonstrating how our virtual learning environment (VLE) functions as an active support system.

During the session, attendees will:

  • Understand ESOL learning needs: Discover how ESOL learners rely on multimodal inputs (hearing, seeing, and doing), structured scaffolding, predictability, and self-paced study to internalise professional concepts
  • Recognise learning barriers: Examine hurdles that increase cognitive load, such as dense technical tasks, fast spoken delivery, navigation anxiety, and hesitation when asking for support
  • Explore built-in VLE accessibility tools: Tour platform tools such as bite-sized, structured lesson pages, video speed controls, searchable transcripts, interactive glossaries, how-to sheets, and private academic tickets that enable low-pressure communication
  • Use analytics for targeted interventions: Learn how to review VLE progress tracking data to identify specific sticking points, such as repeatedly replayed clips or incomplete tasks, ahead of live classroom sessions
  • Integrate VLE resources into teaching: Find out how to model digital tools in class, align tutor resources with online modules, and turn platform model answers into structured frames for speaking and writing tasks
  • Learn to apply VLE strategies and classroom language techniques: Enhance accessibility and support learner progression by using approaches such as simplifying spoken language, pre-teaching key vocabulary, promoting repeated exposure, and checking understanding
  • Work through real-world VLE scenarios: Review example case studies demonstrating practical step-by-step platform pathways, such as supporting learners with technical vocabulary, using VLE analytics to guide learners who benefit from rewatching video lessons, and building independent study confidence

Why digital accessibility matters for ESOL learners

When learners must work towards demanding professional qualifications while processing an additional language, thoughtfully designed tools provide vital reinforcement.

Our 2024 survey of past Online and On Campus learners who identified themselves as ESOL highlighted the direct impact of these features:

  • 91.7% reported that having access to video subtitles helped them to understand key concepts
  • 88.9% found interactive, searchable transcripts valuable for grasping course material
  • 86.8% agreed that studying online alongside classroom sessions supported their overall comprehension
  • 44.4% regularly made use of additional assistive technology while using our VLE

Across professional qualifications, mastering specialised definitions and procedures is essential. The Mindful Education VLE includes subtitles and interactive transcripts that let learners search for specific keywords and immediately skip to the precise moment a concept is explained. In addition, video lessons, which can be paused, rewound, and played at varying speeds are presented with engaging visuals that allow learners to process information through verbal and visual channels at their own pace.

“With my level of English I wouldn't be able to understand and pass the course just by attending the on-campus lessons. I need to read, watch, rewatch and relisten multiple times so that I can learn concepts and improve my English writing. Seeing real examples of accounting helps me understand much better than just reading the theory from books.”
